Hi, I’m Deanne Fitzmaurice
Pulitzer Prize-winning American documentary photographer, Nikon Ambassador, co-founder of Think Tank Photo, and speaker.
While working as a photojournalist for the San Francisco Chronicle, I found myself in the middle of some of the biggest stories of my time — the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the Supreme Court rulings on marriage equality, the human cost of war, a rapidly changing climate, the Bay Area’s dominance in NFL, MLB, and NBA sports, and the steroid scandal that rocked baseball.
That work caught the attention of national and global publications. Soon I was photographing for Sports Illustrated, ESPN, National Geographic, TIME, and others. One story — a photographic essay on a young Iraqi war victim named Saleh — earned me the Pulitzer Prize.
I’m a Nikon Ambassador, with recognition from Pictures of the Year International, American Photography AI-AP, United Nations International Photographic Award, among others, and my work is now exhibited internationally. Today I work with publications and organizations telling their stories, documenting whatever moment or person catches my attention — whether that’s Steph Curry or my seatmate on a plane — and teaching workshops around the world.

Saleh
I began photographing Saleh's story as he was brought to the United States for life-saving treatment, and the early chapters of that work earned me the Pulitzer Prize in 2005. I’m still telling Saleh’s story today.

“Moments Between” extends documentary photography through in-camera multiple exposures, layering more than one moment in time into a single frame instead of capturing only one instant.

Editorial
Whether the subject is a championship athlete, the aftermath of a natural disaster, or an ordinary moment nobody else would have stopped for, it’s my job to get close, stay curious, and let the story reveal itself.
