The Many Faces of Marshawn

I recently had the opportunity to photograph one of the NFL’s top running backs, Marshawn Lynch for Sports Illustrated.  My assignment was to shoot a portrait of him, highlighting his “grill”, a jeweled overlay on his teeth that reads “Seahawks”.  This would have been great, had the grill not covered just his bottom teeth.  It was difficult to photograph him naturally, exposing the grill, so I decided to photograph the many faces of Marshawn Lynch.  It wasn’t what I had hoped for, but no situation is perfect, and we don’t always end up with what was expected.  I sent the pictures to my editor, and the photos ran as a triptych, showing Marshawn’s character.  It’s just another situation that reminds me that as photographers we don’t always come back with what we wanted, but its the unpredictability that keeps things interesting.

The San Francisco 49ers will be in Seattle this Sunday playing the Seahawks in what should prove to be a good match up of nearly identical teams.  Both teams have great defense, a strong emphasis on special teams, and rely heavily on the running game.  The 49ers just barely eek out ahead in numbers, but Marshawn may be the tipping point.  He has rushed for over 100 yards in 3 of 5 career games against the 49ers and has proven to be a thorn in the side of their defense.
